our third date
on that picnic bench
outside a hole-in-the-wall joint
where we shared a plate of sushi
and sipped Japanese beer
i shared my philosophy on love
because i had to know
how you’d read it
you threw your head back
and laughed from your belly
not to shrink me down to size
but a laugh of relief
because we were meeting each other
on the same level
of love
and humor
we inched closer
to avoid the sideways rain
and contemplate dessert
